TORINO EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CHEMISTRY: INTERVIEW WITH DR DANG THANH TUNG

Al Lingotto 16 to 20 September was held the II European Congress of Chemistry, a prestigious event organized by EuCheMS (European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences), Italian Chemical Society and the National Council of Chemists and coordinated by Prof. Lorenza Operti and Prof. Salvatore Coluccia University Turin.

attended by 100 researchers under 35 years (including 63% women) from 30 countries. Although most came from Italy, Spain and Germany, were also represented a majority of European countries as well 'as there were also representatives from around the world: Japan, Australia, USA, Brazil, Morocco and Viet Nam.

At the conference, held in Torino, we interviewed Dr. Dang Thanh Tung - participating in European competition for young chemists, from Viet Nam that Germany has chosen to do his PhD.

  1. you tell me briefly how and 'took the His academic training?
I graduated in 2006 in chemistry from the Department of Chemistry, University of Natural Sciences in Ha Noi, National University. During the Masters, I attended a program of educational cooperation between the two universities, National University of Viet Nam and the University of Greifswald, Germany. I've been kissed by fortune because I was chosen to carry out a PhD at this university in Germany. Following the transfer of my academic tutor at the University of Greifswald Rostock, now, I'm doing my PhD at latter 's University.
  2. What is currently working at the Universita 'di Rodstok ?
Currently, as I mentioned before, I am a PhD student at University of Rostock - Department of Chemistry and my academic tutor is Prof. Peter Langer.
  3. Why 'Germany has chosen to carry out its activities'?
Being a student just graduated, I wanted an educational experience in research at a university in a developed country in the world and, fortunately, from Germany, I received an interesting opportunity that I have immediately caught.
  4. Here in Italy we think that our science is still tied to baronies and opportunities and there are few opportunities' for young talent like her. Which does not happen in other EU countries. What do you think she or her colleagues in the research in Italy? (Criticisms are welcome)
do not think the state of research in Italy is as bad as you described to me. Statitiche the world on research that involved the Italian universities show that Italy has a similar position to that of the most advanced European countries (Germany, France and Spain). In addition, the number of universities and research institutes in Italy, involved research is comparable to that of other European countries.

The scholarship of doctoral students in Germany is similar to the one in Italy.
  5. She has participated at the European YOUNG CHEMIST AWARD? If so, what research or research group? And what are the expectations?
I participated at the European YOUNG CHEMIST AWARD, presented a study entitled: Palladium-Catalyzed Regioselective reactions of tetrabromothiophene, selenophene and-N-methylpyrrole. The expectation and the reason why I participated in that contest was to evaluate the contribution of my research to science in general, compared to those undertaken by other research groups in Europe. Through this involvement I was able to assess what
  6. How does the search in his home country? He sees potential 'in Viet Nam now, they say the media is going through a phase of strong economic growth?
research activities in Viet Nam are currently not yet at the level of other advanced countries, but given the potential of Vietnamese youth in terms of intelligence, creativity, commitment and initiative, this difference may be in a few years filled. As for the economy of Viet Nam, I think my country has great potential in several areas and I think in the future will become stronger and more developed in all aspects.
  7. What would you advise a young man of his country who want to undertake a promising career in science?
View my young age and little experience, are unable to give an opinion on what advice to give to a young man of my country.
Anyway, I want to tell a standard path to become university professor in developed countries such as Germany. After the post diploma - university, you can start working as a PhD student for 3 to 4 years. After this period, he participated in a research group in advanced countries (Britain and the U.S. are two countries chosen) for 2-3 years as a postdoc - post doctorate. The next step is to carry out research of Dr Habilitation - Search post - Professor insolitariamente for 3 to 5 years. After all these steps, if you are lucky you become a professor.
As you can see, to pursue an academic career requires a great passion for research. I hope that you young people, make the right choices and to be successful in your life.

Dr. Dang Thanh Tung, Thank you for your cooperation and I hope that you interview to collect more and more success in his college career.
